Summary: Facebook is not just the most popular social network, but permeates every age group.
Well, there's little surprise here: Facebook is the 800 pound gorilla of the social world. However, there are a couple of other points in this article that may be a surprise to some.
-
Across the board, among every age group polled, of those who have a social media account, nearly everyone has a Facebook account. This includes everyone from teenagers to baby boomers to centenarians. We're talking 97% or higher in every category. Impressive.
- LinkedIn, while far behind Facebook in penetration, is now the 2nd most popular social media platform. Of course, since LinkedIn is designed for business networking, its primary audience are people of working age.
I've been telling my clients for over a year now that LinkedIn is the next frontier in social media beyond Facebook. If you have a business and you want to fully utilize the social media, take the next step beyond your Facebook Fan Page and set up a strategy to use LinkedIn. I think you'll find it refreshing. Unlike Facebook, which is a hodge-podge of people mixing personal and professional messages, LinkedIn is about business.
I intend to take my own advice and devote more of my social media time to LinkedIn in the coming months.
